Rep. Steve Knight can be reached by email here.
You have served the California’s 25th congressional district for the past decade, and were an assemblyman, a city councilman, a cop (serving on the LAPD’s ‘CRASH’ Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums team in the department’s dark-days early-’90s…but I won’t hold that against you) and a member of the US Army. Thank you for your decades of public service, you had a nice run.
May you relish your remaining months as an elected official, because I personally, along with my family, friends and neighbors, will see to it that you are never elected to represent the public again.
This week, you voted to roll back the Affordable Care Act in favor of Trump Care, a half-baked bill that will cause tens of millions of Americans to lose health coverage or have to pay far higher insurance costs while at the same time weakening the fiscal stability of Medicare.
I would like to personally thank you and the 216 other GOP reps in the House who voted for corporations, for greed, for an authoritarian state that has surrendered any illusion of governance on behalf of the people today — you have made my job as a voter so clear, so easy. You have showed me beyond any reasonable doubt that the $174,000/year plus benefits I pay for you to represent me is simply wasted. Nothing, and nobody — meaning nobody in your seat — would be a better alternative.
You voted for an unvetted healthcare solution that gives $600 billion in tax cuts to corporations and an additional $2.8 billion in breaks for America’s 400 richest families while the sick, the poor, the elderly and the children suffer. Whether it passes the Senate or no, you have directly voted against the interest of your constituents, singling out children and the elderly.
You have pointed your finger directly at a segment of the population that already struggles mightily and dashed any semblance of hope to lead healthy, productive lives.
I’m not sure what your strategy is, whether you’re greedy, ignorant, stupid or just plain evil but whatever it is your feckless abandonment of those you represent will not be forgotten.
Tens of millions of lives will be denigrated and/or lost because of your actions. Women, all women — more than half the population of your district — are now defined as being born with a congenital defect. Those who have been raped, have suffered from postpartum depression, had a cesarean section or who have survived domestic violence are all classified as having had a preexisting condition. Your vote will even make it possible for insurance companies to deny coverage for gynecological services and mammograms.
Your roots do seem to favor racism, or at least some kind of ribald ignorance when it comes to this nation’s history. In 2014, you were one one of just three California legislators who voted against a measure barring the display or sale of Confederate flag images from California state museums and gift shops.
…Not sure why you want to defend a flag that is a symbol of slavery and oppression and has nothing to do with the constituents in your district, but oh well.
There was some hope when you would not endorse Trump, but after his unlikely victory you came out of the shadows and admitted you voted for him.
After that, you voted against a resolution that would have directed the House to request 10 years of Trump’s tax returns, which would then have been reviewed by the House Ways and Means Committee. You don’t support the regulation of greenhouse gas emissions even though you serve a district near to the ever-rising Pacific Ocean and you supported Proposition 8, an initiative in California to eliminates rights of same-sex couples to marry. If that weren’t all bad enough, you also seem to be siding with the anti-vaxxers.
It gives me no joy to know that an illustrious career serving this state and this nation has been ended by one indulgent and selfish decision, but that was the vote you cast. You are Roman Catholic so I’m assuming you’re preparing lots of excuses for when you meet your maker, or even your Pope who stands directly in opposition to you on most issues.
I couldn’t help but notice your one-star rating on Google and I do so look forward to joining the rest of your constituents in voting you out of public office — for good — in 2018.
P.S. – Great job exempting yourself from this shit sandwich you’re shoving down the collective throats of your citizenry.
